Four weeks for research is not the longest time but it is a just the right amount of time for someone who
wants to know what it is all about. Atleast that is how I felt after the end of USURF. I have always
wanted to go to Grad school so I felt it all came down to how much I liked or did not like my four weeks
of research in UNIST. Well, I am glad to say I am still sticking to my wish to go to Grad School and the
research experience was both fun and enlightening.
I worked under Prof. Namhun Kim in the Design and Human Engineering Dept. His U-Cim lab focuses
on Human in the System (HITS). I worked on a project involving mobile robots. Prof. Kim’s vision for the
project was to design a communicative or interactive environment for the mobile robots and try to
redefine the concept of affordance in a more concrete manner. I found his vision and ideas incredibly
fascinating and I was incredibly enthusiastic to contribute as much as I could. I wanted to design a
realistic environment for the project, one which was pertaining to real life and could possibly be useful
later now. I wanted to explore the option of replacing guide dogs for the blind with mobile robots
designed and programmed to do the same things a guide dog would do for a blind person.
I spent 4 weeks, researching on the properties and responsibilities of a guide dog, constructing and
analyzing six specific situations of interaction between a human and dog. And finally, providing a
pseudo-code by transferring the situational information to the instances of a mobile robot control.
I was very fortunate to have Prof. Kim helping me with the project. He was great help in explaining the
concept of affordance and making sure that I was heading in the right direction with my project. All in
all it was a great experience and I was happy I decided to participate in the USURF program.
